The Art of Playback Theatre: Sharing Stories & Storytelling in Action

Log in to save this to your schedule, view media, leave feedback and see who's attending!

Come have fun (And make connections) in a meaningful way! Stories are how we understand our world, who we are, where we have come from, and what we may have come through. These Moments of our lives can be touchstones, full of power and significance. They are the glue that holds families, communities, and cultures together. In this workshop, participants will be introduced to the art and form of Playback Theatre, a unique theatre improv form in which the personal stories of audience members are spontaneously 'played back' by a group of trained actors using sound, movement, and spoken word.  No previous theatre experience is necessary.

Through the power of play and improvisation, participants will be able to develop confidence, joy and a deeper sense of empathic connectedness to each other and the Natural world around them. We will learn a brief history of Playback and explore the art and form of Playback through community building, theatre games, and learning 2-3 basic forms of Playback Theatre. We will use Playback to explore topics important to the group, with a focus on our personal stories and experiences. We don’t assume that all are comfortable or feel safe in the outside world, and this too will be explored as well. There will be ample time to consider the ways in which you will be able to take this back to your place of work. The stories and themes are part of the ways in which community, insight and empathy are developed."

Playback Theatre is practiced throughout the world with applications including creating meaningful rituals, empowering diverse voices, supporting conflict resolution, encouraging dialogue, and building empathy and connection to the world around us. Playback, a form of citizen theatre, is practiced in schools, universities, hospices, prisons and in open performances that can respond to, and create discussion about, real world situations. Many Playbackers are not actors in the traditional sense but come from all walks of life. No previous experience is necessary to come and have some fun and engage with the play of Playback Theatre!
